Operations Chief Financial Officer

Sarah Martien leads the planning and management of the foundation’s operating expense budgets. Her team stewards and supports the financial, strategic planning, and analytical functions of the Operations divisions across the organization.

Sarah joined the foundation in 2022 as deputy director of financial planning and analysis in the Global Health Division. Previously, she spent 17 years in the nonprofit, health care, and academic sectors, focusing on executive-level strategy, operations management, research compliance, and financial planning and analysis.

Most recently, Sarah spent five years at Fred Hutch Cancer Center as associate vice president of the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division, where she was responsible for the division’s financial performance and grant and contract processes and policies; led strategic planning efforts with faculty and executive leadership; oversaw global research operations; and led process improvement efforts and special projects across the organization.

Earlier, Sarah served in various senior leadership roles focused on finance, operations, and change initiatives at Seattle Children’s, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign, and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.  

Sarah holds a Master of Public Administration from Baruch College and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Kent State University. She serves on the board of the Somali Health Board, whose mission is to reduce health disparities in King County’s Somali community. She is guided by a commitment to collaboration and transformative change, operational excellence, and impactful leadership in complex environments.
