SEATTLE -- The Asian Counseling and Referral Service (ACRS) went “three for three” this month, garnering a total of $3 million for its capital campaign from three sources: the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the City of Seattle, and King County. The $1 million challenge grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is the largest award to date for ACRS’ campaign to build its new home in the Rainier Valley.
Plans for the new building, scheduled to open in 2008 on Martin Luther King Jr. Way South, include an activity center for elders to exercise and eat nutritious meals, a computer lab for jobseekers to learn computer skills, a classroom for youth tutoring, expanded space for more counseling, general meeting rooms and additional parking. Some of the rooms will be made available to the community for events and workshops. The whole capital project is estimated to cost $15.5 million.
