Over the past decade, the world has made rapid progress in expanding financial inclusion. Globally, 76% of adults now own a financial account, up from 51% a decade ago. In developing countries, 71% of adults now own a financial account, representing a 30-percentage point increase over the last decade. Importantly, the gender gap in account ownership is decreasing: in developing countries, it moved from a 9-percentage point gap in 2017 to a 6-percentage point gap in 2021.
