The following table is an overview of the major areas of giving within the foundation’s U.S. Program and who may be eligible for funding. Please note that we award the majority of our U.S. Program grants by proactively identifying potential recipients. Unsolicited letters of inquiry are accepted by our Pacific Northwest initiative only. The application process differs across each of our education scholarships.

D.C. Achievers
Students at six Washington, D.C. high schools who live in Ward 7 or 8 and plan to attend college.

Gates Millennium Scholars
African Americans, American Indians/Alaska natives, Asian Pacific Americans, and Hispanic Americans with academic promise, unmet financial need, and demonstrated leadership.

Gates Public Service Law Scholars
Students with demonstrated leadership potential, aptitude, and commitment in the public service law arena. Must commit to work in public service law for seven years following graduation.

Washington State Achievers
Students at 16 Washington State "Achievers High Schools" who plan to attend college within the state.

Nonprofit housing and service providers committed to providing housing-based services for homeless families in Washington state may respond to requests for proposals from Building Changes, Inc.
